Spinal Cord Injury
A spinal cord injury can cause severe damage from a traumatic blow to the spine that fractures or dislocates vertebrae. It’s not uncommon to completely sever the spine, but most often, an injury will cause fractures to the vertebrae. These fractures can diminish nerve cells called axons that communicate the spinal cord to the brain and to other parts of the body.
Depending on the location of the injury, as well if it’s complete or incomplete, the symptoms experienced from a spinal cord injury can be mild, severe, or life-threatening. Some symptoms can also be delayed instead of showing immediately due to swelling and bleeding internally.
Symptoms of spinal cord injury include:
- Pain and numbness
- Burning sensation
- Inability to move extremities
- Inability to feel pressure, heat, or cold
- Muscle spasms
- Loss of bladder control
- Loss of bowel control
- Difficulty breathing
