Autoimmune Cytopenia

Cytopenia caused by autoimmune disease (autoimmune cytopenia) is a potentially serious complication that occurs in approximately 5–10% of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL). Many of these patients have ‘simple’ autoimmune cytopenia without concurrent progressive CLL and can be managed with immunosuppressive therapy. In contrast, those patients with concomitant progressive CLL requiring treatment or autoimmune cytopenia that does not respond to immunosuppressive therapy have ‘complex’ autoimmune cytopenia that is more difficult to manage.
